Baby Savannah on the Mend!
For full details on this little girl, see entry below, but the short version is that this 3 month old puppy was a stray on the streets of Savannah, Georgia, and was limping around on a broken leg. My friend Mary took her to the vet, where she is staying while she heals. She has some gastrointestinal issues going on right now as well, and the vets thought it would be a good idea to keep her there rather than take her to the shelter.

When Mary arrived to visit her yesterday, Baby immediately started wimpering when she saw her and wagging her tail. Mary might be the first and only person who's shown her any kindness!

Her leg is now in a splint and she is getting good meals and plenty of TLC. However, none of this is free, of course. If you have even a couple bucks to spare, it will add up and go toward her care. Mary and the vet are working together to spread the word and hopefully find someone to take her, but if any of our rescue friends have any room and want to help, transport can be arranged!

Baby Savannah
Our rescue, www.ironunderdawgs.com, is based in Central Indiana, but I still carry a torch for my old hometown, Savannah, Georgia. It's such an amazing city with one glaringly HUGE downside -- so many stray and neglected dogs running loose!

My good friend Mary owns 2 Great Danes and a Plott Hound. She lives in a transitional area of the city and is often overwhelmed with sadness, seeing dozens of homeless animals on her daily walks with her own pets. She struggles to make ends meet like so many of us and wishes she could do more. This morning, she couldn't turn her back on a little black puppy on the stoop of a vacant house, emaciated and holding up an injured leg. She wrote to me:

"Just when I thought I had saved some extra $$...I thought for a second that I would call Animal Control when they opened to see if they could get her. I went home and came back with some dogfood. I set it down and she ate it all. She was growling at me -so I tried to make friends-she seemed to settle a little so I tried to pick her up and she tried to bite me and was screaming-so I just kept talking in a calm voice and stroked her-she calmed down and I picked her up and took her home. I gave her some water-then went inside to take a shower and get ready for work. Came back out later with bits of a left over pork chop and sat wth her. She was really sweet and much more relaxed. All bones-so very thin. So I had to get to work-didn't know what to do so I took her to my vet. They said they had to give her vacs-they would also clean her up and check her out. I told the girl to please ask them to give me a break because I have so many of my own dogs-and I am just trying to help this girl out. I just don't have a lot...so I will probably take her to the Humane Society-and they also charge you to take them...but poor thing-they said she was about three months old-she is all black. I mean what are you supposed to do?"

We've all been there. You know you're broke and can't save them all, but at some point, there is that one that you cannot just leave....

If you have a couple of bucks and would like to help Mary cover this little girl's vet bills at Eastside Vet Clinic in Savannah, Georgia, you can call (912) 232-1741, and ask to chip in on Mary Strickler's account for the black stray puppy. Or, you can chip in here and we will will send a check. Every little bit will help get this girl healthy and on her way to a new life. Thanks! --Dana
